The multiple lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she's an adjunct professor, diligently grading exams and teaching thermodynamics in the hope of one day becoming a tenured lecturer. By night, she supplements her nonexistent salary by offering the service of being a fake girlfriend, a job she performs successfully thanks to her charm and ability to embody any version of herself the client desires.

The truth is, it's a fantastic job... until the Elsie-verse she's worked so hard to build comes crashing down. Jack Smith, the arrogant and irritatingly attractive brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the heartless experimental physicist who ruined her mentor's career and undermined the reputation of theorists worldwide. And that same Jack Smith, who happens to be the head of the Physics department at MIT, is now standing between Elsie and her dream job.
